Prep Your Walls
Walls must be clean and dry before applying Bella & Birch. The simple preparation steps listed below are needed to ensure that Bella & Birch bonds to the wall.

For smooth, painted drywall:
  • If you have done any spackling, spot paint or prime these areas and wait for them to dry. You can use leftover paint to seal these areas.
  • Sand or scrape any rough areas on the walls if needed. If you live in a dwelling that might contain lead paint - do not sand or scrape the paint. Click here for precautions while sanding any finish.
  • Damp wipe the walls to remove dust. If you have done any sanding, make sure to damp wipe after sanding.
For new, unpainted drywall:
  • Clean away any construction dust before priming the walls and applying Bella & Birch.
  • Thoroughly damp wipe the walls and nearby surfaces to ensure that the dust is gone.
  • New walls must be sealed with a primer or paint before applying Bella & Birch. Make sure the walls are dry before applying.
For wallpapered walls:
  • Remove wallpaper as recommended by the wallpaper manufacturer. Make sure all adhesive is removed and rinse walls again if stripper or detergent was used.
  • If the walls were painted before wallpaper was applied, follow the directions for painted drywall or plaster. If the wallpaper was applied to unpainted drywall, follow the directions for new, unpainted drywall.
For walls that need extra cleaning (e.g. kitchen, bathroom walls, walls with smoke, hairspray residue): Add 1-2 cups of vinegar or rubbing alcohol to ½ gallon water and use this to damp wipe the walls. Avoid detergent-based cleaners.
